Web/Mobile App Critique: Facebook

For this review, I evaluated the Facebook mobile app, one of the most widely used social media platforms. Because people interact with it daily, it’s a strong example of how design, usability, and functionality directly impact the user experience.

Usability

Facebook is generally easy to use, even for new users. The main navigation bar is clearly positioned, and core features like the home feed, notifications, and messaging are easy to access.

However, one usability issue is feature overload. There are so many tabs, shortcuts, and icons that it can feel cluttered. Users may struggle to find less frequently used features because they are buried within menus.

Design

The design of Facebook is clean and consistent, using a simple blue-and-white color scheme that is easy on the eyes. The layout is consistent across devices, making it easier for users to transition between mobile and desktop versions.

That said, the design can feel crowded, especially in the feed. Ads, suggested posts, and group recommendations often interrupt the natural flow of content, making the interface feel less organized.

Functionality

From a functionality standpoint, Facebook is extremely powerful. Users can:

  • Post updates, photos, and videos
  • Join groups and communities
  • Buy and sell items through Marketplace
  • Communicate instantly through Messenger

The app performs well overall, but it can sometimes feel slow or laggy, especially when loading media-heavy content or switching between features.

Recommendations for Improvement

Based on my evaluation, here are three key improvements that would make the app better:

  1. Simplify Navigation
Reduce the number of tabs and reorganize features so users can find what they need faster without digging through menus.
  2. Reduce Content Clutter
Limit the number of ads and suggested posts in the feed to improve the overall user experience and make content feel more relevant.
  3. Improve Performance Optimization
Streamline the app to reduce lag and loading times, especially for users on older devices or slower networks.

Final Thoughts

Facebook is a highly functional and widely used app that connects people and provides a variety of features in one place. However, its biggest weakness is trying to do too much at once. By simplifying the interface and improving performance, it could deliver a much smoother and more user-friendly experience.
